wow!
the 99 cent in your town is clean then… the one in Chico is filled with rotten foods and expired foods and they never remove it. the put the NEWEST ones in the back, and the expired ones in the front of it. I once bought a Chip and it was as hard as a plastic chip! I looked at the expiration date and it was 3 months after the expiration date! I went back there and told them. They allow me to pick a different bag. I looked carefully, and the old ones are at the front. New ones, AT THE BACK

I found some of the best products (name brand) at the 99. I always stop in there before I go to any other grocery store.

@ExerciseTV Great video. Just to let you know, it’s not just closeouts that the 99 Cents Only stores focus on. They also work similarly to how the more common grocery stores sell their generics. It’s just off brand, which is why they can provide it at that price.
Since the grocery industry is so well regulated, there’s really no need to worry about the produce here. It varies from store to store on produce freshness and availability, but they’re all pretty legit

@dhandz02 My family has been buying groceries from the 99 Only stores since they were made available. I’ve bought from them while living in Merced, then when I went to college and now am working, I’m happy to say that I’ve been a happy customer after purchasing from locations in Costa Mesa, Long Beach, Bellflower, and Simi Valley.
As with anything, check the quality. I’ve gone to Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons, Sprouts, etc. and have spend much more on groceries that went bad in a couple of days.

I so love that you showed us your haul. You’re right about eating well on a super strict budget. I get $43/ wk in unemployment and I need it to go as far as it can.. Usually I shop the 99 cents stores looking for dry goods, but next time I’m gonna swing back and check out the veggies. Cause really, they can’t have worse produce than Jon’s markets (where everything in that section looks like should be marked ‘irregulars)/ LOL

@dhandz02 Also produce isn’t the kind of thing you should be buying all at once for a whole month anyway. The produce they have in major supermarkets is coated with wax and other things to keep them fresh. Have you ever bought strawberries or anything like that at a farmers market for a whole month? No, because it will go bad in a few days because there are no pesticides or wax or anything like it on the fruits and veggies. FRESH food only lasts a few days.

@dhandz02 You’re absolutely right! As with ANY grocery store, you definitely need to check the expiration date, examine the produce for bruises, open the eggs to make sure they aren’t cracked. The food I bought this past weekend, is still in perfect yummy condition. It’s the same food as other markets get, just the overstock…
I got mine at the Venice .99 Cents Only Store. It’s on Lincoln, right next to Wholefoods Market- ironically. I know that selection varies by store, city and state…

Be very careful buying produce from the .99 cent store. My wife found that they have produce so she started buying it from there for a month or so. The issue is most of the food went bad after only a day or two, or was already bad to begin with but we didn’t know because of packaging. I was wasting money buying produce from them instead of my local supermarket because I threw out so much bad food.

@shesobreezy My .99 Cents Only Store is in Venice, CA. Apparently some Wal-Marts also have very competitive produce pricing if you don’t have a local dollar store that sells produce…

@ExerciseTV First I would like to say that my earlier message was a bit misguided, and I apologize for taking and of my frustration out on you. That being said , I too would rather that people eat more high nutrient foods and less high calorie, low nutrient foods. I know that you were just trying to show that Fruits and Veg. is not something that cant be in every diet or budget. My argument is with products that are full of pesticides unfair labor/trade policies.

You also have to take into account that most people DO NOT have a 99 cent store in their town.. let alone one that actually sells food.

@derickganesh Seems you missed the point. I’m promoting healthy eating. There is no excuse not to eat healthy. The price of produce has turned people to processed junk and fast food. .99 store shows that you can eat whole foods for less. As for the growers, if they didn’t want to sell to .99 store, they wouldn’t. I agree, pesticides are awful. I prefer organic and go to my farmers market, but not everyone can make that choice. I’d rather people eat cheap produce than junk for the same price.
