A complex of angular buildings and a 1,776ft spire designed by Berlin-based architect Daniel Libeskind was today reportedly chosen as the plan for the World Trade Centre site. Mr Libeskind’s design beat the Think team’s “World Cultural Centre” plan, which envisioned two 1,665ft (499.5 metres) latticework towers straddling the footprints of the original towers. The choice was made by a committee with representatives of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC), the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the governor and the mayor. LMDC spokesman Matt Higgins said that the committee met for 45 minutes on Wednesday afternoon and unanimously decided on a plan. Redevelopment officials were due to announce the decision publicly today. Both Governor George Pataki and Mayor Michael Bloomberg favoured the Libeskind plan, an important factor in the decision, according to a source close to the process. LMDC Chairman John Whitehead telephoned Mr Libeskind with the news, the source said, telling the architect that his “vision has brought hope and inspiration to a city still recovering from a terrible tragedy.” Mr Libeskind said he had no comment on the announcement. But he told the LMDC chairman that being selected is “a life-changing experience,” the source said. The architect, whose firm is based in Berlin, has estimated the cost of building his design at $330m (?208m). Nine proposals for redeveloping the site, where nearly 2,800 people died on September 11 2001, were unveiled on December 18 last year. The design competition was launched after an initial set of plans, released in July, was derided as boring and overstuffed with office space. The two finalists each featured buildings surpassing Malaysia’s 1,483-foot (445-meter) Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest in the world. The World Trade Centre towers stood 1,350ft feet (405 metres) tall. A small number of telecommunications towers would still be taller than the Libeskind spire. After the two finalists were chosen, both teams of architects were asked to revise their designs to make them more easily realised. Mr Libeskind, whose original design called for a memorial 70ft feet (21 metres) below ground, reportedly changed that to 30ft, allowing for infrastructure and transportation underneath. The source said that the plan chosen could also be slightly altered to accommodate victims’ relatives, who told redevelopment officials they did not approve of plans to build parking areas at the base of the pit. The parking areas would be for memorial visitors, not general public parking, but Mr Pataki has told planners to “find an accommodation” that the families would approve, the source said. Mr Libeskind, 57, has said he included the sunken space because he was inspired by the surrounding immense slurry walls that hold back the Hudson River – which he says are the most dramatic elements to survive the terrorist attack. He wanted visitors to be able to visit the site in a quiet, meditative space. As presented in December, the design called for a museum in the sunken space, near where he envisioned a memorial to be placed. A separate competition for a memorial design will begin this spring. The 1,776ft spire, next to a cluster of office buildings, was designed to house a garden all the way to its top, and not office space, because “gardens are a constant affirmation of life”, Libeskind said when he presented the plan. Mr Libeskind was born in Poland in 1946 and became an American citizen in 1965. He studied music in Israel and in New York, but left the field to study architecture. Although his firm is based in Berlin, he has significant ties to New York. He earned his degree in architecture at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1970. “I arrived by ship to New York as a teenager, an immigrant, and like millions of others before me, my first sight was the Statue of Liberty and the amazing skyline of Manhattan,” he said on his website. “I have never forgotten that sight or what it stands for.” Mr Libeskind is striking in appearance with thick-framed, wraparound glasses and a shock of silvery hair. He is noted for his iconoclastic work and museum designs. His firm, Studio Libeskind of Berlin, won wide acclaim for the design of the Jewish Museum in Berlin. The firm also designed an extension to the Denver Art Museum; the Spiral Extension to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; the Jewish Museum in San Francisco; the postgraduate student centre for the London Metropolitan University; and the extension to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. In 2001, he became the first architect awarded the Hiroshima Art Prize, given to an artist whose work promotes understanding and peace.

We all are creatures of habit and get use to items being in their place, so be open to change.Now you have selected a space and it’s time to see how you can inexpensively spruce it up and make it conducive to working from home. If the space is in a separate area, a fresh coat of paint can liven up the space. May be you can paint one wall to highlight your space and leave the rest of the room a different color.Do you have pictures that are hiding in the closet…this may be a good place to create your gallery. Or go to the local home store and purchase inexpensive shelves and brackets and use that wall space to store books, office supplies, or your specific business tools. Though you can still add a picture in between the books to add some design to your area.Next, look around your house to see what furnishings you can repurpose for your office. Do you have a comfortable chair in your dining room that could work fine as an office chair? If you don’t have furniture that works, you can check out unfinished furniture stores, thrift shops or an office supply business to find reasonable pieces of furniture to create your office.If you need to purchase a desk, you can always get a piece of wood to place on top of two file cabinets. Again, this is a do it yourself job as you get to paint or stain the wood, paint the cabinets to blend with the wood….but you can tailor the size of the desk to your actual office space. Don’t have a separate room you can designate as a home office? You can create a comfortable and functional computer work station in remarkably little space. A corner of your living room or bedroom, even a spare closet, can provide plenty of room. First measure out the amount of space you can allocate for your work station. Then, start to plan. You need a surface for your computer monitor or laptop, and room underneath for your hard drive. If you have a printer and/or a scanner, this also needs a work surface, ideally with storage space underneath for printer paper and other supplies. You may also want space for an additional external backup hard drive. Measure all your equipment and furnishings and play with a floor plan. If you can find a ready-made work station that fits into your space, great. If not, make one. A 24- to 30-inch core door thrown over a couple of two-drawer filing cabinets makes a handy desk, but takes up quite a bit of room, and it may or may not be comfortable for you depending on your height when seated. An alternative would be to check home improvement stores like Home Depot for components like counter tops, shelving, and legs that can be assembled in a number of configurations. (Check the kitchen section of the store!) Assembling a desk with an L- or U-shape allows you to spread out your work. If you want an L-shape, make sure the extra arm is to the right of the monitor if you’re right-handed, to the left if you’re a leftie. You’ll need shelving to store CDs, computer manuals and other reference books, computer accessories and supplies, project files, and inboxes. Magazine holders make great containers for computer manuals and other documentation, and can be filed on a shelf along with reference books. Use bookcases as boundaries for your office and as additional storage space. The tops of the bookcases can also provide additional work space in a pinch, or display space for personal items to give the area a homey touch. If you have a closet you can spare, remove the doors and replace them with louvered doors that can be folded out of the way while you’re working. Install a work surface spanning the length of the closet, and then build shelves above it. You can also create storage space beneath the counter, but leave an area open to slide in a comfortable office chair. If you have a CPU for a monitor, make sure the depth of the closet will accommodate the CPU; or consider upgrading to one of the newer, compact flat screen monitors. Or use a laptop -you’ll have room to spare. You might also consider building or buying a rolling cart for your printer that can be stored in the closet when not used, and pulled out while you’re working. Also consider a pull out work surface or a folding table which can be tucked into the closet when not in use. Additional storage space can be built along the sides of the closet. You’ll need both electrical outlets and a phone jack (or cable outlet if you use Roadrunner) in or near your work space. If you can install them, great; otherwise you’ll need to run extension lines in from elsewhere. Make every attempt to provide easy access to all outlets and jacks; having a surge suppressor with several plugs attached to the back of the closet right above the work surface should make life much easier for you. If you have to run extension cords over a high traffic area, run them through protective conduit that allows you to put them underneath carpet without causing accidents. Don’t run unprotected cords underneath carpeting; a worn cable can create a fire hazard, and people can trip over the bump! If you’ve managed to renovate a spare closet, all you need to do is close the doors to hide your office space. If it’s in a corner of the bedroom or living room, think about setting up an ornamental folding screen to block off your view of the office; remove it when you’re using the office, or leave it up for some privacy. Take a few moments during the planning phase to think about the look of the work space. Your choice of materials, colors, and design accessories go a long way to creating an attractive area that’s an enjoyable, comfortable place to work.

Commercial office space is unnecessary when you first start out in computer consulting. Unless you have a very compelling reason for renting commercial office space, save your money. You’re much better plowing that money back into marketing and promotional expenses. Even a tiny commercial office space is going to be $400 – $600 a month. A low traffic retail store is even more; at least a $1000-$2000 per month. Rather than waste that money on commercial office space, invest it in marketing and business development. You’re going to need to do these things whether you have commercial office space or not. There is no reason to add to your overhead expenses. When you start out, a home office is the best choice. Until you bring on a lot of staff, it’s really not going to benefit you to have a commercial office space. Most of the time you will be servicing clients at their office, going on sales calls, or attending networking events. In computer consulting your clients will not be coming to you. You go to them. The time you spend in your own office is minimal. The money you spend on your office space should be minimal as well. You might think that you need commercial office space if you want to run seminars. These are an excellent marketing tool but you can rent executive office space very reasonably. This type of commercial office space is rented on an as need basis by the hour or day. The Bottom Line on Commercial Office Space Commercial office space is expensive. There is no reason to put yourself on the hook for $500 or $1,000 a month or more, every single month just to be able to do say you have an office. The time you or your clients spend in your office does not warrant renting commercial office space. Use your home office for as long as you can and rent out space by the hour or day as you need it. When it comes to home or office architecture ceilings are often overlooked in the planning and sales process. Out of sight, out of mind? is the byline. Yet ceilings are the top cover of any room. They are as important as the walls or floors because they most directly offer us shelter and protection from the world. Remember you are in your bed hopefully asleep half of the time you are at home. Perhaps not as much at work. Ceiling offer tremendous influence directly above our heads and over our minds. If the head did not matter why it would be attached to your body. What to check for in your inspection? Beams, points or arrows and low or slanted ceilings. First of all what is the measured ceiling height? The optimal ceiling height in a room is between 10 and 12 feet height. If your ceiling is less than 8 and ½ inches then it can well affect your life limiting your opportunities and options and burdening you with life’s problems. Second note the colors of your ceilings in your office or home. The best overall choice for a positive effect on your life is the simple color white?. White is always the best choice for a ceiling. The worst Feng Shui color is definitely is a Mediterranean beach or dark blue. These are water colors? and bring poor stability and work habits. Sort of like a day off at the beach. Skylights can bring you openings, an open-minded view of life. This involves bringing you vital energy. Skylights are a good thing over bedrooms. However ensure that the light does not interfere with your sleep patterns. You should be aware that ceiling beams although trendy can be dangerous and indeed a poison. It is as if the beam is a highway leading from the room draining the room and yourself of vital energy. Try not to purchase a home or rent office space in an area with open beams. If the beams are structural and necessary or cannot be removed in an inexpensive or practical manner they can always be covered with false ceiling in the ceiling or by other covers. Mirrored ceilings are often used in home and office architecture to create the illusion of greater space in a geographic area. Be more than wary of mirrored ceilings. Are you in need of extra office space but not happy to move? Want to improve the first impression your office makes on visitors? Then it is time to look at the key areas to address when planning an office upgrade. From the evaluation and planning stage, through design, implementation and completion, there are many large steps to take and many decisions to address, to ensure that your office refurbishment project meets your requirements. These include planning and project evaluation, interior design (including placement of partitions, plumbing, ceilings and walls), communications installations (phone, fax, external networking) and data cabling, and furniture and equipment. As part of this process, of course, attention is needed on latest environmental and health and safety regulations. Preliminary Evaluation and Feasibility Before considering a move, it is of course natural that a complete re-evaluation of the use of current space is made. A successful outcome might be that a move to new premises is not needed. Your evaluation and feasibility planning stage of the project will compare options, develop plans and make a final selection. Thus the project could become a refurbishment project and not a relocation plan. But whether the plan is to refurbish and fit out existing premises, or to move to a new location, the next and following steps are the same, which are: Commercial Interior Design The first step is to use design skills to implement business requirements. Health and Safety Compliance, and Risk Assessment With any move or upgrade, it is vital to carry out a comprehensive management audit covering five main areas of your company. These are: management of Health & Safety; Mechanical & Personal Safety; Fire Protection; Accident investigating and recording; General housekeeping, safety signs etc. It is also vital, of course, that your company policy contains the necessary organisational responsibilities and arrangements for implementation and carrying out the Policy Statement. Safe working procedures must be written to cover specific work activities happening on the premises. These phases contain within each of them, a need to be up to date with current best practice and to ensure employment of correctly qualified personnel with appropriate accreditation.
